USM Sports Management Degree Programs Achieve High National Rankings

The University of Southern Mississippi’s sports management degree programs have received high national rankings by online educational guide The University’s Master of Science in Sports Management earned a No. 7 national ranking, while the entire Sports Management program received a No. 11 ranking.

USM was among hundreds of other competing institutions across the country. The comprehensive student-focused research guide is based on an assessment of 1,604 accredited colleges and universities. Each program is evaluated based on program quality, graduation rate, reputation, and post-graduate employment.

The 2020 rankings are calculated using a unique scoring system that includes student engagement, potential return on investment, and leading third-party assessments. analyzed hundreds of schools with comparable programs on a scale of 0 to 100.

USM’s Sports Management program immerses students in the industry, combining traditional classroom instruction with hands-on experience. Students receive professional training from industry leaders to prepare for leadership positions on professional sports teams, intercollegiate/intramural sports, college/university recreation programs, and more.

“Southern Miss Sport Management is honored to receive this prestigious honour, but it is a tribute to our commitment and the success of our sports management students,” said Dr. Chris Croft, assistant professor of sports management. “Our faculty is constantly striving to improve our student experiences through collaboration and experiential learning opportunities with area sports organizations to leverage classroom learning.”

USM’s Master of Science in Sport Management prepares professionals for advanced careers in the growing sports industry by enhancing their critical thinking skills and exposing them to expert knowledge and research in the field of sports. The program has been designed and developed, allowing students to acquire and demonstrate an impressive set of management skills and an understanding of the sports industry through a combination of required core courses, electives, research and experiential components.

Dr. Brandon Allen, assistant professor and coordinator of the Master of Science in Sports Management program, notes that the Master of Science program has grown steadily since its transition to USM’s College of Business and Economic Development.

“This recognition validates the dedication and perseverance of the Sports Management faculty in providing a quality educational experience for our students,” Allen said. “The program is flexible, with degree requirements offered in both online and traditional formats. Our graduates are employed in the sports industry and, in turn, advertise and promote our program to other students.
