UIndy Master of Science in Sport Management Program Hosts First Indy Sport Business Conference – UIndy 360

Zachary Terry ’20 (sports management) was a merchandise and facilities intern for the Indiana Pacers in the spring of 2018.

Sports business is a hot topic right now. From college athletics to minor league sports to the top of the professional ranks, well-educated and dedicated people are needed to make America’s pastimes come true.

Indianapolis University’s Master of Science in Sports Management (MSSM) program has created the inaugural Indy Sport Business Conference (ISBC), an event that “will help attendees understand what it takes to succeed in the field and how to prepare for that first job”. said Jennifer Van Sickle, director of sports management at the University of Indianapolis.

The first annual ISBC will take place the 1st of April2019, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Van Sickle said the primary goal of the event is to connect current sports management majors with industry professionals to help with career development and prepare them to enter the industry.

“Our programming is built around that goal,” Van Sickle said.

Students from the UIndy MSSM program worked to define the conference agenda. Logistics are handled by Van Sickle and MSSM graduate student Jacob Springer.

Conference panelists will include representatives from professional sports, collegiate athletics and other sports industries. A list of speakers will be announced shortly. Time for networking is scheduled after each panel session.

The day is also an opportunity for students to present a project or research carried out during the academic year. These projects can be a starting point for discussions with sports industry professionals attending the conference.

The $40 registration fee includes all of the day’s educational sessions, a networking lunch, and a tour of Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Plus, the first 50 registrants will receive a free ticket to the Indiana Pacers vs. Detroit Pistons game that night. Those who do not register for the free tickets in time can purchase discounted match tickets.

The conference is open to students from all universities with an interest in sports business. Registration must be done in advance; no registration will be taken at the door. The deadline to register is March 20. Register here.

“We are really excited about this opportunity and hope this will be the first of many conferences to come,” Van Sickle said.
