New internship supports women in sports management – UofSC News & Events

Lead Instructor Susan O’Malley is leading the way by organizing a new partnership to provide internships for female students



The University of South Carolina and Monumental Sports & Entertainment are proud to announce a new internship program for female students majoring in sports and entertainment management. The partnership will provide four paid internships per year to advance students’ career experience and develop future industry leaders.

Lead Instructor Susan O’Malley, former president of the Washington Wizards and Washington Sports and Entertainment, was instrumental in developing the new partnership with MSE.

“I think that’s part of my role,” says O’Malley. “In what remains a male-dominated field, when all things are equal, many organizations may be more likely to hire John than Jane. I want to help young women overcome these barriers.

At 29, O’Malley became the first female president of a professional sports franchise and one of the first women to hold a major front office position in major league sports. She joined the South Carolina faculty in 2016 and is able to share years of executive and real-world knowledge to help future leaders, of all genders, who wish to follow in her footsteps. As an advocate for diversity in leadership, O’Malley has been able to provide opportunities for students to connect with industry leaders and has opened doors to transformative opportunities – like the new internship program – to under-represented students.

The internship program will provide women who are sports and entertainment management majors at UofSC the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with industry leaders and explore various management career options. sports and entertainment professional. Two internship positions will be available each semester, starting in the summer of 2019, then moving into a fall and spring rotation.
