MSU sports management professor and students publish research on media and sports

Morehead State Professor of Sports Management, Dr. Steve Chen, and undergraduate researchers recently published their research on the impact of media on sports.

MSU graduates Anna Gdovka (Class of 2020) from Lexington, Adrienne Hall (Class of 2021) from Olive Hill, and Eric Street (Class of 2019) from Lexington, worked with Chen to produce “Perceptions on Implementing a Comprehensive Sports Website and Online Streaming Service for Kentucky High Schools.” It was published in 2021 in the Atlantic Marketing Journal. In this study, researchers examined how interactive websites and online streaming services focused on interscholastic sports could benefit high schools in Kentucky. The authors concluded that the development of a livestreaming platform and an interactive website would benefit many stakeholders, including parents, student-athletes, sponsors, and college coaches and recruiters.

Gdovka and Chen are the authors of “Collegiate Athletic Fans Perception of the Use of Social Media in Marketing”, published in 2021 in the Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship. This article examines how college sports spectators find information. The study concluded that spectators rely much more on social media and word-of-mouth than on a school’s athletics website.

Both Gdovka and Hall participated in the MSU Undergraduate Research Fellowship program. Gdovka said she learned a lot from the experience and hopes her work will inspire future Eagles.

“I am so honored to have my research published! To finally see this all come together in writing and for others to learn what Dr. Chen and I have been working so hard on for the past two years is very rewarding,” said Gdovka. “I hope my research inspires others to do an undergraduate scholarship on something they are passionate about, and I also hope it helps someone who wants to develop the use of social media in college sports. .”
