Ranked in the top 5 in the UK for research power (REF2021), the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation is a dynamic and inclusive department, where staff are supported to have a positive impact on our students, through research-enriched programs and beyond academia, through world-leading research.
Our research falls under the three cross-themes of (1) Optimize human performance(2) Promote and preserve health and well-beingand (3) Informing practice and policy. Particular areas of excellence include musculoskeletal and neuromuscular adaptations to exercise and post-exercise recovery, the role of sport and exercise in achieving and maintaining optimal human performance in high-performance populations (e.g., elite athletes, military personnel, and astronauts), the use of functional foods to aid recovery after sport and exercise, the micropolitical dimensions of sports work, and the role of exercise in chronic disease management.
Our research and education is facilitated by strong internal collaboration and external relationships, with funding received from a range of governing bodies and national sports clubs (e.g. EIS, TASS, Newcastle United FC, Queens Park Rangers FC, Sunderland AFC, England Athletics), national/international organizations (e.g. Health Education England, UK Space Agency, Medical Research Foundation, National Institutes for Health Research, European Commission, European Space Agency) and industry (e.g. Cherry Marketing Institute, Danu Sports , Naturex, GlaxoSmithKline).
Working within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, you will bring expertise in the areas of sports coaching and/or sports management. Applications are welcome from all disciplines within these broad fields, but are particularly encouraged in the area of sports performance analysis. The incumbent will undertake and publish high quality collaborative research that will serve to enrich the education of our students. The incumbent is also expected to participate in an outside activity to generate revenue and promote the topic.
Applicants should hold a first degree and be qualified (or exceptionally soon to be qualified) at doctoral level in a relevant subject, have specialist expertise and knowledge acquired through demonstrable research excellence. A proven ability to deliver high quality research-enhanced training in an appropriate field, as well as a strong research profile, are essential for this role. This position is advertised in our Assistant Professor and Lecturer roles (role descriptions are attached). Colleagues appointed to our Lecturer grade are typically early career scholars who are supported throughout their probationary period to develop their academic profile. At the end of the probationary objectives, these colleagues are automatically transferred to the role of assistant professor.
